Phillip Island Tours
Located only about an hour and a half driving distance from Melbourne, Phillip Island is a 26 km long (9 km wide) island located south-southeast of the capital. The island forms a natural breakwater for the Western Port’s shallow waters, giving it an exciting 97 km long coastline that offers some amazing surfing beaches right alongside more sheltered coves, perfect for swimming with the family.
Connected to the mainland town of San Remo by a 640 metre long bridge, the island has a small permanent population of under 10,000 residents; however, it’s natural beauty and other attractions cause summer visitor numbers to swell the population to around 40,000!
Phillip Island offers its visitors a number of alluring attractions, such as amazing wildlife, family-friendly sites, gorgeous beaches and coastline features and – of course – motor sports. The islands most iconic wildlife are the penguins that waddle up onto shore daily during the Penguin Parade. There are also fur seals at Seal Rock and koalas all over the island, among other native animals.
The islands beaches, wilderness areas and holiday resorts offer the ideal mix of landscapes for a memorable holiday, with bush walking, surfing, swimming, fishing, wildlife spotting and sightseeing all popular pastimes on the island.
The Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit is steeped in racing history and is very well known amongst racing enthusiasts. Once used for the Australian Grand Prix, the circuit is now used for the Australian motorcycle Grand Prix, as well as the Superbike World Championship, V8 Supercars and the Australian Drivers' Championship.
About the Little Penguin
The little penguin (Eudyptula minor) – which is also known as the fairy penguin in Australia and little blue penguin (kororā) in New Zealand– is the world’s smallest species of penguin, growing to an average height of only 33 cm and weighing around 1.5 kg, depending on subspecies. Little penguins are found in Australia and New Zealand, but there have been possible spottings in Chile.
In Australia, the little penguins colonise primarily on offshore islands, which protects them from predators. The little penguin has blue colouring on its head and upper parts, with a light grey colour extending along their cheeks. They are bright white from their chins to their bellies and have a dark grey beak and pink feet (black on the undersides). Many little penguins have striking light blue eyes, while others have light grey or dark grey eyes.
Little penguins live for an average of around 6.5 years in the wild and are diurnal, spending the majority of their day fishing for small fish and foraging for crustaceans in the water. They waterproof their feathers by preening along each one with a drop of oil they obtain from an oil gland near their tails. Amazing!
